The 2013 season is finally upon us as Thursday night kickoff in Denver is just days away.  Rich and the podcast crew go through the entire Week 1 schedule and make their picks for “The Rich Eisen Podcast” Weekly Pick ‘Em Challenge for the opening weekend.  If you haven’t done so already, be sure to sign up today and join in on the fun with the Rich Eisen Podcast League.

Our first guest on the podcast is from an interview Rich taped earlier this summer when he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio and the set of the film “Draft Day” to sit down with Academy Award winning director and actor Kevin Costner. Costner stars as the Browns general manager in the Ivan Reitman directed film set to hit theatres in 2014.  It’s a fascinating listen to hear Costner, the iconic sports movie actor of our generation,  discuss which sports movies he’s enjoyed most and why it took this long for him to finally take on a football based film.

Rich continues podcasting form the road as he next heads to the set of Carrie Underwood’s Sunday Night Football music video shoot.  The multi-platinum and Grammy award winning singer, who took over for Faith Hill as the voice of Sunday Night Football, sits down with Rich on the sound-stage in Los Angeles where she was shooting the new open for NBC’s Sunday Night Football.  Be sure to catch Carrie’s new rendition when it premieres this Sunday as the Cowboys take on the Giants at 8:30 pm ET on NBC.

Rich then welcomes back in studio podcast favorites Jeff and Jackie Schaffer to chat about the kickoff of the 2013 NFL season, plus the season 5 kickoff of their hit show “The League,” which makes the move to Wednesdays at 10:30 pm ET on… Read

Our good friend Jeff Schaffer, an Ann Arbor, Mich. native, stops by toward the end of the Hoke conversation and hangs out for Rich’s chat with Detroit Lions legend Barry Sanders. The Pro Football Hall of Fame running back is one of the latest former NFL players to be named to the Heads Up Football advisory committee in an effort to teach parents and coaches safer practices and techniques in youth football.

The podcast rounds out with Schaffer and the podcast crew chatting about the latest news from around the league, and getting the latest details on Schaffer’s upcoming projects, including the fifth season of… Read

After a week-long hiatus Rich and the crew are back recapping all that happened in Week 15 and across the National Football League landscape while they were gone, including the down-to-the-wire playoff races that are happening in both the AFC and NFC.

Rich then dials up WFAN sports radio host Joe Beningo for the pulse on the tri-state mood following the Mark Sanchez led disaster that struck on “Monday Night Football” for the Jets.  Beningo isn’t shy with his thoughts on Sanchez or apologetic on how Jets management has handled the entire 2012 season. This is one New Yorker’s perspective you won’t want to miss.

Things then settle down a bit when Rich, Law and Brockman welcome back in podcast favorites Jeff and Jackie Schaffer for a chat about their beloved Seahawks and much more. Jeff and Jackie’s hit Fantasy Football based comedy show “The League” has its one-hour season finale airing this Thursday at 10:30 pm ET on FX and it guest stars none other than “The Purple Jesus” himself… Read

Rich Eisen Podcast: Wes Welker and Jeff Schaffer

We’ve passed the quarter post point of the NFL regular season and in this Year of the Exploding Offense look who’s on top of the receiving world: Wes Welker, who’s on pace to smash Marvin Harrison’s single-season record for receptions and Jerry Rice’s single-season record for receiving yards. And with the Patriots fresh off a big win in Oakland and getting set to host the hated New York Jets – the team that ended its 2010 season if your memory needs refreshing — who better to have on the podcast than Wes Welker? So, we fire up Patriots cam for him. And, yes, I do ask him if he has a message for Rex Ryan.
My other guest is a returning guest: Jeff Schaffer, the co-executive producer and co-writer of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Jeff was last on the show in July when we dedicated an entire podcast to “Curb.” This time, Schaffer appears to promote a show of his very own creation: the fantasy-football inspired comedy “The League,” which premieres this Thursday night for a third season on FX. Lots to talk about with Jeff, including his own fantasy leagues and how he incorporates them into the show. Which NFL stars are set to make cameos on his show this year? And then there’s this: How can he can create/write/direct a show about a 2011 fantasy football league when he conceives and shoots most of the scripts during the summer?
Of course, I can’t let Schaffer leave the studio without asking him the origin of the newest classic “Curb” storylines from this past season (Pig Parker, Sh*t Bow, Bill Buckner, Palestinian Chicken Restaurant to name a few) and how he and his writing partners come up with this stuff with Larry David. Then, I press him on the most important issue of all: Will there be a ninth season of “Curb”? His answer… breaks entertainment news, which, as you know, I love to do on the podcast.
Keep an eye peeled for another show this Thursday with NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi, former boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard and a special surprise guest who, after having an unfortunate career-altering incident in the TV booth, is starting his comeback on the podcast. Stay tuned.
